Safety Stand Down Hits Yakima

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA--It is fire season and county leaders want to make sure everyone's safe.

At Saturday's Summer Stand Down, at the Yakima Wal-Mart people young and old could learn how to use a fire extinguisher and what to do in case of an emergency.

This is the first time the Yakima County Building & Fire Safety has done an event like this.  Unlike many learning seminars, they can get parents together with their kids.

"We are getting parents and kids going through the EDITH house, learning about fire," County Fire Marshal Jakki MacLean said.  "[They learn] what to do if the smoke detector goes off, have a meeting place, all the safety things that both the kid and the parents need to know."

MacLean said the county plans to host a few more Safety Stand Downs this summer.
