HARRAH--Nineteen people are homeless this Independence Day and firefighters say fireworks are to blame.
Crews said a young boy was lighting off fireworks inside a building behind the Caribou Ranches on Progressive Road.
Even without much wind at the scene on Friday night, firefighters say the blaze quickly tore through buildings that were close to 100 years old.
There wasn't much left of the buildings by Saturday afternoon.
Firefighters said the outbuildings were converted in to housing for ranch employees and their families.
Crews got the call around 8:30 p.m. Friday. Some firefighters were on the scene for 13 hours.
This is the busiest weekend of the year for firefighters, and nearly all are worn out by Sunday.
"It's very draining," Capt. Landon Lommers our people they're really good about stepping up to the plate it's a lot of time away from their famillies, other things that they would like to be doing. They put in a lot of hours.
The fire took out several buildings and also burned a few hundred tons of hay.
Lommers estimates damages at $800,000.
The boy who confessed to starting the fire is not a Yakama Nation member, so he's not allowed to have fireworks.
No word whether he'll be cited yet.
