BENTON COUNTY, Wash. - The need for animal contol services in rural Benton County has been a hot topic, and now the a decision is up to voters.
Benton County Commissioners voted Monday to put the measure of a new animal control facility on the November ballot.
The voters, who are only the people living in the rural areas of Benton County, would see an increase in property taxes if the measure passes. That's roughly $14 a year for a $100,000 home.
This includes people who live south of Prosser, west Benton City, the Paterson-Plymouth area down by the Oregon border and Finley.
It would fund a million dollar facility over the next 10 years to care for the stray dogs and other animals in the county, something commissioners feel needs to be done.
"There are no license fees in rural Benton County and that probably is what would take place if you got a yes vote for the property tax assessment for animal control," said Benton County Commissioner Max Benitz Jr.
The location of the new facility, as well as who will operate it, has yet to be decided. Commissioner Benitz says that won't be seriously discussed until they see what the voters want.
