Lewis County deputy dies after collision with elk

Associated Press - August 19, 2009 1:25 AM ET

PACKWOOD, Wash. (AP) - A Lewis County sheriff's deputy has died of injuries suffered when his patrol car hit an elk.

Chief Deputy Stacy Brown said the 34-year-old deputy died about 8 p.m. Tuesday. He had been taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after the accident. Brown said more information on the deputy would be provided Wednesday.

Brown says the deputy was responding to back up another deputy on a domestic violence call when he hit the elk about 8:30 p.m. Monday on U.S. Highway 12 near Packwood.

The elk was killed in the collision.

State Fish and Wildlife Department spokesman Craig Bartlett says there is a large elk herd near Packwood and some residents have complained about the animals trampling yards and eating foliage.

The complaints led the department to allow a special elk hunt along Highway 12 between Morton and Packwood.
