Crews gain ground on Omak wildfire

Associated Press - September 3, 2009 1:25 PM ET

OMAK, Wash. (AP) - Firefighters in north-central Washington are keeping watch for any new fire starts after a thunderstorm rolled through the area.

Cynthia Bork, a spokeswoman for the fire crews, says Thursday morning's storm brought lightning and wind. But she says it also dropped one-tenth of an inch of rain on a wildfire burning east of Highway 97 between Omak and Malott, about 65 miles northeast of Wenatchee.

Firefighters had the 310-acre fire 16% contained Wednesday night, but Bork says crews worked through the night to secure lines around the blaze in advance of the storm. They expect to make more progress Thursday.
