Huge fire rages in Finley

Posted: Updated:

FINLEY, Wash--  Flames broke out in Finley just before two Thursday afternoon.  If you took a drive down State Route 397 you couldn't miss the heavy black smoke.

Fire crews say right now it appears a train was travelling about 50 miles per hour when it sparked some nearby dry brush lighting it up in flames.

It wasn't just one hot spot that caught fire; in fact, there were several, and it went from 25th Avenue all the way past Straight Bank Road, a good five mile stretch.

And even though we're seeing cooler weather, that doesn't mean the fire threat has been lifted.  But crews say fires like this could soon be ending for a while.

"We're just right on the edge here of expecting the season to make its change," says Benton Co. Fire District #1 Captain Jeff Ripley.  "The wild land fire season doesn't necessarily follow the calendar when you go from summer to fall.  After the weekend, that cold front coming through, probably will reduce our fire danger significantly."

The fire was so big it took crews from all surrounding towns to help put it out.
