LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) - A dredging contractor plans to start blasting rock Sunday from a stretch of the Columbia River near St. Helens, Ore.
The Corps of Engineers says the blasting will create only bubbles at the surface, but vessels must avoid a 1,500 safety zone. Spokesman Matt Rabe says vessels will have to contact the blasting platform to determine when it is save to pass.
After the blasting, which must be completed by the end of February, the contractor, J.E. McAmis Inc., of Chico, Calf., will remove boulders from the Columbia near Longview.
The Daily News of Longview reports the $52 million contract is the last in a Corps project to cut the shipping lane 3 feet deeper between Astoria and Portland.
