SOUTH OF RIMROCK LAKE--The first day of elk hunting season didn't go well for a 68-year-old Colfax man.

A Yakima County Sheriff's Office report the hunter slipped and fell while walking south of Rimrock Lake around 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

The fall caused him to fire his gun, shooting himself in the leg.

A group of hunters and emergency personnel carried him to a nearby road, where an ambulance drove him to the nearby Tieton airstrip.  He was then transported by helicopter to a Yakima hospital.

His name was not released.
