KENNEWICK, Wash.- 2007 was the last time one of ours', sworn to protect, was killed in the line of duty. Walla Walla County Sheriff's deputy Michael Estes was killed in a traffic accident near Burbank.
Before then was the 1999 tragic murder of Washington State trooper Jim Saunders. He was shot and killed in Pasco on a route traffic stop.
For Kennewick police, you have to go way back, before they even had a formal police. Locals called it "The Great Halloween Massacre" in 1906. That's when Kennewick Marshal Mike Glover and County Sheriff's deputy Joe Holzher were killed in a shootout somewhere near current day Clover Island.
Glover and Holzher were pursuing two men who robbed a local store and then took off to a train yard campsite known as the "Hobo Jungle." It was there police and the robbers fired in a hail of bullets. One of the suspected robbers was killed; but so were Glover and Holzher.
Benton County lost deputy Dennis Bryant in a traffic accident in 1991. In 1955, Pasco police lost officer Alva Jackson when he was shot and killed by a teen.
