KNDO/KNDU Tri-Cities, Yakima, WA | State mulls action over Yucca Mountain

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- It's turning into a yucky mess over Yucca Mountain.
More local leaders and politicians are concerned where all the Hanford waste will go now that the President decided Yucca Mountain won't be the final destination.
We asked the Governor what she thought and she says she's working with Attorney General Rob McKenna to see if the state will bring it's own legal action.
McKenna says it's possible the state could follow South Carolina, which filed a suit against the federal government because of their nuclear site at Savannah River, and join the legal battle.
"I am working with the lawyers in my office to analyze our options for bringing a lawsuit and or intervening in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission proceedings on Yucca Mountain," McKenna said.
Last week a group of Tri-Citians announced they want to sue the President and the Secretary of Energy Steven Chu over the Yucca Mountain decision.
So far the only response back has been from the DOE; they said any lawsuits wouldn't change their mind.
