UW class tests flight of helium-filled football

Associated Press - March 3, 2010 3:35 PM ET

SEATTLE (AP) - Some football fans might think a kicker with a good hang time is using a football filled with helium.

A University of Washington statistics class decided to test the flight of a football inflated with helium, comparing it to a football pumped up with air. Another football in the test this week was filled with argon - a gas heavier than air.

A couple of Huskies football players did the kicking for June Morita's class. Both kickers took 18 placekicks - six each with helium, air and argon-filled footballs.

The Seattle Times reports they found the helium and air balls performed about the same in both distance and hang time.

The kickers averaged about three yards less in distance with the argon balls.
