Spokane sheriff doesn't want Pine Lodge for jail

Associated Press - March 11, 2010 11:45 AM ET

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich (kuh-NEZ'-oh-vich) toured the Pine Lodge women's prison at Medical Lake that the state plans to close and says it is not a viable option for a new county jail.

He told KREM Wednesday that the prison is too spread out and would take too much manpower and money to operate. He says rooms are too flimsy for a medium-security jail.

Pine Lodge current holds 149 prisoners but could house 430. Budget cuts closed part of the prison last year, and the Legislature is considering closing Pine Lodge entirely this year.
