YAKIMA, Wash.- A firefighter is out of the hospital and Highway 12 is back open after some hay in the back of a truck caught fire Wednesday afternoon.
The driver of the truck didn't realize the hay was on fire. The burning hay kept falling out of the truck, setting fires along the highway.
"What we're suspecting right now is they blew a tire and possibly the friction from the rim on the road or the tire caused the hay fire," said Abel Castilleja from the Yakima Fire Department.
Gleed firefighters focused on putting out the spot fires while Yakima firefighters worked on getting the hay out and keeping it from re igniting. The biggest challenge wasn't fighting fire but responding to so many different fires within a few hours.
"We were pulling from the Boise fire to come here and we had another incident going and we're just spread, operating thin sometimes. We only have a couple of apparatus at the city," said Castilleja.
One firefighter was hospitalized for heat exhaustion. Crews say he fought the Boise fire and then responded to the hay fire. He was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon.
