YAKIMA, Wash. - According to recent Yakima County statistics, there are over 1,000 homeless people in the valley.
Around 70 people in Yakima gathered at an hour-long candlelight vigil on Thursday night, remembering local people who died homeless during the past year.
Governor Christine Gregoire proclaimed Thursday as "Homeless Person's Memorial Day."
And the Homeless Network of Yakima County took part in this vigil for the second year in a row.
It's for people like Yakima's Santos Rivas Jr., who feels it's tough being homeless.
"Finding a place to shower, lot of walking, walking, lot of walking, I get ID'd here and there, so mainly a lot of walking," he said.
The Homeless Network of Yakima County says Thursday, December 21 is the first day of winter and it's also the year's shortest day and longest night -- the hardest time of the year to be homeless.
