KNDO/KNDU Tri-Cities, Yakima, WA | State Lawmakers "Sweet" on Sweet Onion Bill

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Lawmakers in Olympia are pushing a bill to make the Walla Walla sweet onion the official vegetable of the State of Washington.
You might not think adopting a new state vegetable would be a difficult bill to pass. But this is the fourth year bill sponsors have tried to make this thing happen.
Last year the bill got diced by state potato people cried the potato had more economic benefits, but this year the discussion is adding flavor to the sessions.
And the bill's few opponents are seeing a new layer to House Bill 1556.
"One dissenter who knew that his wife hated the onions had decided to be a no vote on her behalf, but he is a co-sponsor of the bill this year... I hope his marriage is fine," said Rep. Maureen Walsh (R), 16th District.
The idea for the bill came from a group of students at Kirkland Junior High School. Today the bill peeled through the House Executive Committee and is one the menu for tomorrow's Executive Session.
