RICHLAND, Wash.- The Assistant Secretary of the Department of Energy grants the Department's highest safety honor to hanford's groundwater cleanup workers.
Just a couple years ago, the groundwater cleanup crew recorded 100 safety concerns a year. Last year, only nine.
The DOE Assistant Secretary presented the crew with Voluntary Protection Program Star Status Tuesday. It's only the 27th DOE project nationally that can fly the flag; 13 of those fly at Hanford.
DOE officials say it's due to workers putting safety above all else.
"We beat the construction safety statistics by a factor of ten. And that doesn't happen just by accident. It happens because of people just like all of us that are standing here today making it clear that this is not just something we talk about, this is something we want to do," said DOE Assistant Secretary Jim Rispoli.
Fluor Hanford operates the groundwater remediation project. It's the company's ninth VPP award for Hanford work.
