
WASHINGTON--According to the Washington Wine Commission, the funding comes from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
For several years, money has been given to Washington and Oregon so that they can boost awareness of Northwest wines on a global scale.
This year, $650,000 dollars will allow close to 40 wineries to promote their blends overseas.
Right now, the commission is targeting their key markets which they say are Canada, Japan and the United Kingdom. This funding helps them drive the influence. Without it, promotion would be tough.
"We would be hard pressed to have the resources to do our promotional activities in those key export areas," says Robin Pollard, Executive Director, Washington Wine Commission.
Pollard says the money also helps the commission hire representatives in each of the target markets. Their goal is to establish contacts while giving people a big taste of the Northwest.
