55-year-old Lou Yallup remains in stable condition at Seattle's Harborview Medical Center.
Yallup had been walking down Knight Lane collecting cans, when his neighbor's five dogs got loose and went after him.
The hospital is not saying much, but some people who live around here say it could be a while before he comes home.
The first witness on scene says one of Yallup's legs had been chewed to the bone below his knee.
This is one of the more violent attacks in recent memory, but the Wapato Police Department tells us it's not uncommon to see stray dogs walking down the street in the city, and they get calls to deal with aggressive dogs all the time.
Just this morning, an officer had to shoot a pit bull that attacked and killed a rottweiler on East Wapato Road.
The Wapato Police Department says it was recently forced to cancel its contract with an animal control officer due to city budget cuts.
Now patrol officers are tasked with handling cases involving aggressive animals.
