KENENWICK, Wash. - It's confirmed. Washington state is the second largest wine producer in the country, trailing only California.
The Washington Wine Commission and the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers announced the results of a new study Thursday at the Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick.
Both groups are thrilled, and said it will help fund research to stay competitive in the future.
"I think it's proof on something that we've known all along, that the growth that we've seen in Washington wine industry is translating to a significant impact to the state and national economy," said Robin Pollard, Washington Wine Commission, Executive Director.
"Most of the funding needs for research comes through the federal funding process. So for us to be able to show on an economic scale our value in the state helps us do that, and helps communicate the need for production agriculture," said Vicky Scharlau, Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers, Executive Director.
The study found Washington wine and grapes contribute $3 billion each year to the state economy, and $4.7 billion to the country.
