In the spirit of election day several fast food chains and coffee shops gave away free food and drinks if you voted. If you went to Starbucks on election day and voted you may have been lucky and got a free cup of coffee.
Starbucks planned to give away a free 12 oz drip coffee to anyone who voted regardless of what candidate they chose. It turns out that giveaways to voters could violate election laws in some states that prohibit gifts for voters including Washington State.
The Secretary of State, Sam Reed's Office says he wishes hypercaffeinated Washington voters a double-tall happy election day.
"If starbucks which is one of the most popular places in the country can get people to vote then it's great. I wouldn't be offended if they asked me if I voted. I think it would be offensive if they said did you vote for a certain person. If they gave coffee for voting for one person it would be completely out of bounds but to ask you to vote for someone is not offensive," said Erika Bonneau, who voted for Obama.
Other companies are giving away goodies. Ben and Jerry's gave free scoops of ice cream and Krispy Kreme is giving away star-shaped donuts.
