RICHLAND, Wash - A big announcement from Governor Chris Gregoire and Attorney General Rob McKenna.
Washington state will sue the federal government.
Gregoire says she has run out of patience, and wants a court to enforce and oversee the Hanford cleanup schedule.
Attorney General McKenna says he wants the court to require the Department of Energy to develop a schedule on clean up activities.
Leaders from one of Hanford's biggest watchdog groups, Heart of America Northwest, are applauding Gregoire and McKenna for the lawsuit.
The executive director says filing this lawsuit is the only way to get the deadly waste out of the tanks before they leak.
He says contrary to what the critics are saying, this is not going to slow down clean-up, it is going to speed up clean-up.
US Senator Patty Murray and Congressman Doc Hastings are asking the state and federal agencies to resolve the dispute without heading to court.
Murray and Hastings say they've always defended the states interests in the tri-party agreement. But they say they can't afford to put everything on hold for a lawsuit.
