YAKIMA, Wash-- The streets of downtown Yakima are lined with wineries and upscale restaurants. One new business is breaking the mold and proving different can be a good thing.
To start with, most of the clientele at this shop aren't even old enough to do wine tasting. New Yak City is a hip snowboard and skate shop located on Yakima Avenue.
Co-owner Gabe Figgs said they're busiest after school gets out. Their grand opening on black Friday was a success but, opening a small business is tough. He said they've hit rough patches, but so far the snowboard and t-shirt selection has been popular.
After spending a lot of time up at White Pass Figgs returned to Yakima wanting to instill a sense of community pride.
"New Yak City I guess was something we started calling Yakima as kind of like a term of endearment. More positive than negative. I got so tired of all the negative nicknames everyone had for it," said Figgs.
Figgs said the first round of snow got everyone excited and business was great. His only complaint, the snow and ice is making parking difficult for customers.
New Yak City is located on the corner of Yakima Avenue and Third Avenue. For something a little different check them out.
