ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- Members with the R/C Unlimiteds spent Father's Day at Irene Riverfront Park, for the annual Roger Newton Silver Cup races.
The event is organized by David Newton, from Seattle.
"We have about 12 races around the circuit and we race 1/8th scale unlimited hydroplanes and 1/7th scale unlimited hydroplanes," Newton explained.
There were about 30 participants from the R/C club on Sunday. It's made up of about 60 members from Washington and Oregon.
"This race is named after my father Roger Newton. He started the club in 1974 out the Seattle area, and I raced with him until he passed away up until 2008," Newton explained.
Brenda Brandt from the Tri-Cities, has been racing R/C model hydro's for fours years now, and doesn't mind competing with the guys.
"All four years that I've been doing this, I've been in the top ten. So it's nice to get competitive. They get a little nervous because I am a girl, but great teaching and I love it," Brandt explained.
Like Brandt, Newton spent a lot of time around unlimiteds especially with his father.
"My dad crewed for a long time, so I was always around them. Always a big part of summer," Newton said.
This is the fifth year for the Roger Newton Silver Cup races.
"It's nice to get away, and the guys are amazing. It's a nice family event," Brandt added.
