RICHLAND, Wash.-- The Washington High School Fishing State Championship took place in Richland Sunday at Columbia Point Marina Park.
It's the first ever state championship. Teams of two fished for bass in the Columbia River and the teams with the heaviest fish won. The winners came in with over seventeen pounds of fish.
Washington Bass Federation Youth Director, Dave Brugmann, said all the participants were excited about the new competition.
"This has never happened. These guys are pretty excited about being able to go and being the first ever high school state team bass champions," said Brugmann.
Each state championship participant qualifies for the 2012 High School Fishing World Finals, competing for thousands of dollars in college scholarships and prizes.
