KENNEWICK, Wash.-- A red flag warning effective Sunday in Benton County and the Columbia Basin.
The highest level warning was issued because of forecasted thunderstorms this evening that are coming in with little rain and in the midst of very hot temperatures.
Capt. Devin Helland, Benton County Fire District 1, says with the soaring heat they see a high likelihood that lightning will spark a fire.
"The red flag warnings coming in with the lightening and everything and so there's a great possibility of fires at this point. Whether they're human caused by people still lighting fireworks or with the lightening coming through and mother nature causing us some problems," says Helland.
The fire weather watch is expected to end Tuesday night.
