YAKIMA, Wash.-- The city of Yakima is considering a proposal to establish a new "metropolitan parks district".
The district would handle oversight of the parks... Including operations and maintenance. It would also have the power to raise revenue through fees and taxes.
The city previously had a parks district between 1940 and 1969, but it was dissolved due to financial problems.
Yakima's Parks and Recreation Department says reforming the district would give them more flexibility in dealing with the parks.
"It's... It's just a good thing for us to take a look at options and see what's best for our community, our citizens... Keep our parks and rec facilities as nice as we possibly can," says Ken Wilkinson with Yakima Parks and Recreation.
The parks department says it's still working out the details.
They'll have more to share when they make a presentation to the Yakima City Council next week.
