Gym enhancement fee closing arguments begin

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK., Wash., -- The trial of a man who allegedly charged over 300 gym members a $19.60 "enhancement fee" and then shut the gym down without issuing refunds is nearing it's end.

Jurors will hear closing arguments Monday afternoon and then deliberate on the eight felony theft charges against Jason Sleater.

Sleater was the owner of 509 Fitness in Kennewick before closing it's doors in March of last year; just days after allegedly charging the enhancement fee to members.

Defense attorney Scott Johnson says the case against Sleater is of a civil matter, not criminal.

The state says Sleater "wrongfully obtained" the money by charging members the enhancement fee.
