White, SWAN.--The State's largest fire district said they need more volunteers.
Over the past ten years, Yakima County's Fire District Five volunteer numbers have been declining.
They only have about 190 volunteers to cover 700 square miles.
Firefighters said they had to call on fire departments from Grandview, Toppenish and the Upper Valley to help contain a recent fire in White Swan.
"Without those partners, we would not be able to say that we didn't lose any houses out there and were able to contain that fire," said Andy Babcock, the Volunteer Coordinator for Fire District Five. "It's a team effort. Everyone pitches in and helps together, but we have to keep digging farther and farther into our resources."
Firefighters said they try to make volunteers' schedules as flexible as possible to accommodate other jobs and family activities.
