Yakima, WASH.--The Center For Latino Farmers in Yakima County is awarded more than $500,000 to help new, socially disadvantaged farmers.
The 3-year grant came from the USDA.
A spokesperson for Rural Community Development Resources (RCDR) said the money will go toward teaching farmers about their finances and how to keep good bookkeeping records.
The money has also allowed the center to expand. Therefore, they can now have an office in Wenatchee.
"We've been getting such a big demand from the north side," said Maria Rodriguez. "We said we have clients up there now, but now we're going to be easy facilitating workshops over there so they won't have to come all the way to Yakima and risk travel, especially during the winter months."
The center has also added three new staff members with the grant money.
