The Spokane Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season as a late third period goal lifted the Vancouver Giants to a 3-2 win over the Chiefs Sunday in Vancouver, BC.
The Chiefs struck first when Mike Aviani scored on Spokane's first shot of the game to take a 1-0 lead just 3:29 into the contest. Aviani's third goal in as many games came on the power play and was assisted by Jason Fram and Davis Vandane. Vancouver would even the game at 1 on a Nathan Burns power play goal at 17:51 as the Giants outshot the Chiefs 7-4 in the first.
David Musil's goal 6 minutes into the second period would give Vancouver a 2-1 lead after two periods as the Chiefs were outshot 16-9 through two periods of action.
Mitch Holmberg brought the Chiefs even with his 5th goal of the season with a power play tally at 7:59 of the third period. Brenden Kichton and Reid Gow had the assists. With the assist, Kichton became the all time leading scoring defenseman in Chiefs history with 185 points, passing Bryan McCabe. Vancouver would take the lead for good on a Trevor Cheek goal at 14:07 of the third. The Chiefs were outshot 24-15 in the game.
Spokane will return home to open a 2 game homestand Friday night when they host the Victoria Royals at 7:05pm.
