Yakima, WASH.--People were lining up at Solarity Credit Union Saturday to shred their old personal documents.
Members of Yakima County Crime Stoppers took people's outdated bank and credit card statements, old checks and other identifying papers to dispose of them safely.
Crime Stoppers Treasurer, Rick Ensey, said identity theft is a big problem in Yakima, and people should take extra steps to protect themselves.
"People normally throw their stuff in the trash can, and it's going to get out there," said Ensey. "Your social security numbers and bank accounts and everything, with the ID theft and so on. It's a tough world out there."
Crime Stoppers hosts this event twice a year.
They also offered to get rid of unused prescriptions, limiting the chance of drugs being sold in schools and the community as a whole.
