Yakima, WASH.--Howard Hanson fondly looks down at the last aircraft he flew as a night fighter pilot. He tells people stories of his tours in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. During Veterans Day, stories like Howard's are being heard everywhere.
"We have to support our troops," said Kay Maples. "Our community always supports the troops. We love our veterans. We love the kids going into ROTC. I love everything about this country, and our veterans are top notch."
"I am constantly amazed today, if I wear this cap that says I'm a Korean Veteran how many people come up to me and thank me," said U.S. Air Force Veteran Ken Mark.
"I found here in Yakima, it's been a very nice place to me," said Hanson. "Like here at McAllister, they honor us like they're doing today."
McAllister Museum Of Aviation had free cookies and coffee for veterans Sunday. Splash Express Car Wash in Union Gap provided free washes for over 100 veterans and current military personnel.
And of course, it wouldn't be Veterans Day without a big parade. The community of Yakima lined the streets Sunday morning, waving flags and cheering on participants. Veterans said they recognize all the programs Yakima offers, but there's always work to be done to help veterans in need.
"I think that there are always things that need to be done," said Mark. "People who are in need of VA hospitalization or medical needs have to travel to Walla Walla or Seattle."

The program focuses on offering low-income, homeless or disabled veterans emergency services like food, hygiene products and transportation.
