RICHLAND, Wash. -The Salvation Army is keeping up with the times.
This holiday season you can donate to the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign by using your smart phone or other mobile device.
"What we've found is that people barely carry any cash," says Major Julio Vasquez. "So we're trying to move with the times."
Vasquez says the texting approach had a lot of success in the days following Hurricane Sandy.
To donate $10 to the holiday campaign, text igiverichland to 80888. You can also scan a code on the Salvation Army sign at red kettle locations.
You can also donate the old-fashioned way. Volunteers will ring their bells in front of red kettles throughout the Mid-Columbia between now and Christmas Eve.
The Salvation Army hopes to collect $150,000 in donations this holiday season.
