MONROE, Wash. (AP) - Inmates at a Washington state prison at Monroe are turning stolen and abandoned bikes into gifts for needy children and adults.
The prison bike repair idea at the Twin Rivers Unit spread from a program that has been operating 10 years at the Stafford Creek Corrections Center at Aberdeen.
Monroe inmates have refurbished more than 200 bikes in three years. The bikes are collected by the Snohomish County sheriff's office and turned over to the prison if they are not claimed in 60 days.
The repair shop is overseen by corrections Officer Wayne Gorge on his own time. Service groups donate money for tires, parts and paint.
