YAKIMA, Wash.-- The City of Yakima is missing out on thousands of dollars in unpaid parking tickets.
In all, the city is clearing the books of more than $14,000 worth of unpaid parking citations.
Most of those tickets are from 2006 and earlier, and because of a six year statute of limitations, the city and their collection agency can no longer go after offenders.
Yakima's finance director says the loss is something they've come to expect every year.
In fact, in the last five years the city has missed out on more than $50,000, all because people won't pay their tickets.
"Parking is a little unique in that it is tied to the vehicle. So, it's a matter of tracking down the right person," said Cindy Epperson, Yakima's director of finance and budget.
Epperson says the revenue from parking citations goes to support enforcement and to help pay the electric bill associated with lighting the parking lots.
Even with the loss, she says the city usually rakes in around $90,000 a year from parking tickets.
