Yakima, WASH.-- In your quest to find the perfect Christmas tree, keep these tips in mind.
First, buy locally.
Scott McIlrath, the owner of McIlrath Family Farm Market said if you buy local you're guaranteed to get a fresh tree.
Also, make sure to shake the branches. If needles start falling off, that's a good sign the tree is old and will not likely last the month.
Another important tip, water the tree. Heavily.
"We recommend using warm water to start with, that gets the cells opened up and then it'll start taking in water," said McIlrath. "First 24 hours, it'll take in up to a gallon."
After the first day, trees will consume about a quart of water per day. McIlrath said you can also use cold water after the first day.
