KENNEWICK, Wash.-- For bicyclists and pedestrians, safety on the streets can be a life or death situation.
Two accidents Wednesday on West Clearwater Avenue in Kennewick proved just how dangerous the streets can be.
One man was killed when he was hit by a pickup, a woman on a bike was hurt after getting hit by another pickup about a block away.
Washington state law requires bicyclists to have a light on the front of their bike and a red reflector on the back.
Bikers are to follow the laws of the road, just as cars do, even though, in some places, they can ride on the sidewalk, as well.
"Just like a good driver is going to be watching the background behind their vehicle, through their mirrors and watching through their front windshield for everything ahead of them, a good bicyclist and a good pedestrian will be watching their environment around them as well," said Ofc. Craig Hansen, Kennewick Police Department.
Officer Hanson says he's stopped bicyclists for going the wrong way on the road. And pedestrians can be cited for crossing in a crosswalk without a walk light.
