Washington Growers Pick Record Number of Apples

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Apple growers in Washington State broke records this season, harvesting more apples than they first predicted.

As the season started, growers thought they would pick a record-breaking 121 million boxes of apples.

However, a final look at the numbers shows they actually produced 130 million boxes.

Growers said a warm fall allowed them to get more apples off the trees.

Thanks to crop failures in Michigan and New York, those apples are fetching high prices.

"Right now, we are very thankful that we've been able to supply other parts of the US that have been impacted by the shortfall," said a grower.

Growers said new techniques like high density planting and heavy bearing trees should translate into higher apple production numbers year after year.

Some growers are already adding storage, anticipating they'll need greater capacity down the road.
