Remembering the Homeless Who Died in 2012

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WASH.--On the longest night of the year, people gathered in hundreds of cities nationwide to remember the homeless who died this past year.

Yakima is one of the cities participating in this memorial.

Rhonda Hauff, the Deputy CEO of Neighborhood Health said they'll read the names of ten people in Yakima County that died homeless this year.

This is a big decrease compared to last year when more than 30 names were read. Hauff said this is due to the fact that more volunteers are working to get people out of the cold.

"But overall people need homes, and at times like this it's just a good memory that everybody has to be somewhere." said Hauff.

This is the 8th Annual Homeless Persons' Memorial Day Vigil. After a short ceremony in Millennium Plaza, some warm beverages and winter blankets were available to anyone who needed them.
