HERMISTON, Ore. - A man from eastern Oregon will spend 35 years in prison for kidnapping and raping his former girlfriend.
Officers arrested 29-year-old Alberto Quiroz Martinez after a standoff with police at a cabin in northern Klamath County back in May.
Police say he took 26-year-old Melody Mickel from her workplace in Hermiston, put her in the trunk of his car and drove about 300 miles to the cabin at Crescent Lake. Officers say the standoff ended when Martinez came out of the cabin, using Mickel as a human shield, and police shot and wounded him. Paramedics brought him to the hospital, Mickel wasn't hurt.
Martinez pleaded guilty on December 21st to charges of kidnapping, rape and sodomy. A judge sentenced him Thursday with no chance for early release or alternative incarceration.
Martinez served seven years in prison starting in 2004 for an earlier kidnapping and attempted rape.
Police say Martinez has been released from prison just three weeks before he and Mickel began dating.
