KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Representative Liz Pike from Camas said she plans to file a bill to allow Washington teachers to carry concealed weapons in the classroom.
The proposal would require teachers to get a mental health evaluation and gun training at their own expense before being allowed to carry a gun at school.
Each school district would get to choose if teachers could carry weapons.
Many people have differing opinions about if that would be a hazard or a help.
"A student could come up and take the fun or if the teacher's maybe not in the best place mentally at that time, they could potentially do something. I think if they want to have some kind of safety, they could use something like mace or something that's not going to kill somebody," said Andy Stephan.
"If somebody were to think, I'm going to take this gun to school, wait, Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith have guns too, am I going to be able to get anywhere because they'll all of a sudden wait, there's a reaction to this. It's not a free for all," said Clay Haynes.
Rep. Pike said the permits would be confidential and only the superintendent and law enforcement would know which teachers have weapons.
