Former Walla Walla County Undersheriff Sentenced to Prison for Embezzlement

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash. - Today a federal judge sentenced former Walla Walla County Undersheriff Carole Lepiane to six months in prison for embezzling over $67,000 in public funds.

The 58-year-old from College Place will also spend four months in a halfway house.

The judge ordered Lepiane to pay over $81,000 in restitution, which she did today.  The total includes the stolen $67,000  along with $14,000 it cost Walla Walla County to perform a system-wide audit.

Lepiane took money jail inmates paid to use the phone system.

The cash was supposed to go to an inmate welfare fund to improve jail conditions.

No word on when she'll start serving the prison sentence.
