Snowpack Levels Above Average in Yakima

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash. - For farmers around the Yakima Valley, the deeper the snow, the better. The Bureau of Reclamation says this year's snowpack is already above average.

Engineers say December was a strong month but January is shaping up to be drier.

Chris Lynch with the Bureau of Reclamation says the dry spell will likely continue for the next several day but he hopes to see more snowstorms roll through by the end of the month.

"We depend on the snowpack to be melting, providing river flows, healthy river flows in the Spring and Summer, and you know, stretch it as far as we can," Lynch said.

Lynch says the Yakima Valley considers snowpack to be their 6th reservoir. The other five reservoirs around the valley are also close to being full.
