SPOKANE, Wash. -- That the University Titans are headed to the State Tournament is not in and of itself surprising. The fashion in which they got there, however, is downright stunning.
The Titans trailed Holy Names 45-43 with 4.7 seconds remaining in regulation, with the Cougars shooting the second of two free throws. Off the miss, U-High pushed it ahead to junior McKenzie Peterson, who calmly banked in a jumper as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, freshman Kaitlin Pannell took over for the Titans. Pannell scored U-High's first eight points of the extra session, including what proved to be the game winner. Down 53-52, Holy Names turned the ball over on a steal by senior Kayleigh Valley, who was fouled with 1.7 seconds remaining.
Valley knocked down both free throws, and the Cougars' desperation three barely missed the mark as time expired to clinch the Titans' spot in the State Tournament with a 55-52 win.
