PENDLETON, Ore. - Board members for the Umatilla County fair say they're considering a new smoking restriction policy that would be phased in over two years.
The board is responding to a request from members of a 4-H club who say they experienced cigarette smoke drifting into camping areas and animal barns during the fair week.
Board members looked at a first draft of a policy on Monday. They hope to vote on a final draft next month.
Fair and Fairgrounds Manager Peggy Anderson says a handful of other Oregon county fairs already ban smoking, while several others have designated smoking areas.
Anderson says that in 2014, the Umatilla fair likely will be smoke-free.
