This Beverly Hills outpatient surgery center can now perform minimally invasive laparoscopic hernia repair procedure on patients.
Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) March 15, 2013
La Peer Health Systems enjoys a reputation for providing patients with cutting-edge surgical treatments. Now, the patient-focused center offers laparoscopic hernia surgery, an exciting procedure for repairing hernias on an outpatient basis.
“Despite the fact that laparoscopic surgery techniques have existed for some time now, many hospitals and surgery centers still perform only open hernia repair surgery,” said La Peer's Liza Capiendo, MD, who is board-certified in general and colorectal surgery. “We're pleased to be able to offer patients a minimally invasive method of treating hernias effectively.”
Sacs in the lining of the abdomen, hernias can occur as a result of age, injury or just a natural weakness in the abdominal wall. While some hernias are small and never require treatments, over time many will grow large enough to strangulate nearby blood vessels. Patients who experience a swelling or bulge of the lower abdomen or groin, and those whose hernias are red, painful or increasing in size, will likely require surgery to repair the hernia.
“In the past, hernia patients had to submit to open surgery, which meant larger incisions and weeks of uncomfortable recovery,” said Dr. Gary Hoffman, a board-certified colorectal surgeon and director of La Peer's Hemorrhoid Center of Excellence. “Laparoscopic hernia surgery utilizes smaller incisions and a tool called a laparoscope to repair tears in the wall of the abdomen. As a result, patients are able to get back to working and living their lives faster and with less pain.”
An outpatient procedure, laparoscopic hernia repair is performed at La Peer under general anesthesia. Because the laparoscope has a camera on the end, doctors are able to peer into the abdomen through a tiny incision and then repair the hernia. Generally, patients can leave the Beverly Hills facility just hours after having hernia surgery and are able to return to work and other normal activities in a couple days.
Not only does this state-of-the-art procedure lead to faster recovery times for most qualifying hernia patients, but it also offers a better cosmetic outcome. Whereas open surgery leaves patients with a three to five inch scar, the laparoscopic method of repair creates just a few small marks.
Not everyone is a good candidate for laparoscopic hernia repair. However, the colorectal surgeons at La Peer recommend that patients with femoral or inguinal hernias talk to their doctors to determine if this less invasive treatment is right for them.
